It's quite a shock to see myself and hubbie on the front page of the regional newspaper - that's us! We knew the article was going to be published today but thought it would be second section, second page news. Since the paper hit the newstands this morning our phone has been ringing 'off the hook.' All of the feedback so far has been positive (I haven't checked the phone this afternoon, had to go to work). Most non-JW folks have commented on how sad it is that a religion would allow family members to sever ties over a difference in opinion.
I'm not real keen on being a 'celebrity' but am all for giving attention to injustice that should be corrected. Our story is not special in that we and our children have not been victims of molestation. However, we have been ostracized for speaking in support of changing WT policy. There are folks here on JWD whose stories merit our sympathy and attention. But if our story helps even one person, then we have done the right thing.
Rocky and I have appreciated all the support from our online famly here at JWD, even tho we are infrequent posters.

Pre-HIPPA there was a case at our local hospital where an JW CNA (certified nursing assistant) learned a newly baptized member was receiving a blood transfusion. She called the elders immediately, without regard for the fact that she would definitely lose her job - the thought never occurred to her that she was breaking confidentiality. There were extenuating circumstances, and fortunately, this person receiving the transfusion had a hospital rep call me. I let the elders know, without a doubt, that there would be basically 'hell to pay' if they DF'd this poor woman. This newly baptized person was mildly mentally retarded, high functioning enough to live independently with help from her nonJW family (who would have cut her off completely had they known she became a JW). I asked the elders if they were prepared to take over complete financial responsiblity and care of this person, because if the elders intervened at the hospital, this woman's family would abandon her completely. And I also reminded them that the hospital and the family could sue the sister who revealed the confidential information. (Had this been post HIPPA, this CNA sister would have faced termination of employment and possible criminal and financial charges.) All of this was just a little too overwhelming for them, espcially since the sister receiving the transfusion had sort of fallen through the cracks and had no contact with the local congregation for about a year - she had moved in with her elderly parents to care for them in a remote area and the congregation took on an 'out of sight, out of mind' attitude about her existence.
Bottome line - the fear of displeasing the Borg is so great that man rank and file JWs will breach confidentiality and cannot be trusted!

Serious depression leading to suicial ideations. Seriously, it is so depressing to hear that you need to do more, more, more in God's service - you can never do enough, never have good enough experiences (someone always has one better) or sacrifice enough (those brothers in Zimbabwe sitting on apple boxes in the middle of nowhere without a kingdom hall while we sit in a quickly built, expensive excuse for a place of worship).

It seems that the Pharisaical rules are applied differrently from congregation to congregation, but I believe the fact that the service was done in a funeral home allowed for more latitude. A service done at the KH has to follow the official outline. It's such a sad occasion when someone dies, especially someone well loved. Having stories from their life really helps ease the pain of the loss of life. The preachy stuff does not seem to bring much comfort.

I just love it! the way JWs have to run around to comply with the no-contact orders with DFs and DAs! It's like upsetting an antpile! You would think we had leprosy the way they act/think! And such loving concern for your pain and suffering! I am so sorry you have to make a decision on whether to keep your wife happy or stand up for a principle. ((Jourles))

This past spring a pair of crows hatched 5 babies in the top of the abandoned windmill in the neighbor's pasture. I've watched them pick up field mice in the wheatfield. They also rob birds nests of their eggs. The neighbor told us they aren't good around cattle because they will pick the eyes out of the newborn calves. Bet Hitchcock never mentioned that!! Creepy!

Hmmm, me thinks me will have Mr. Rocky drink lots of water and mark the perimeter of the yard. We also have been seeing moose tracks close to our trees. Might take care of two critters. Thanks for the ideas!

Coyotes are usually more afraid of us than we are of them. But, given opportunity and easy pickings...so while we are at home, they seem to stay away. I just worry about when I am gone to work (fortunately I work only a few hours a day). Rocky will also be working closer to home in the next week or so. So hopefully we can make a bunch of noise and keep the hungry doggies away. We're also both fairly good aim with the gun so we can shoot close enough to scare them without hitting them.

Living in the rurals has many pluses. It also has its downside. I just happened to be home in the middle of the day today, enjoying lunch with Mr. Rocky - I'm usually at work during noontime. We looked out our window and not more than 450 meters (about 500 yards) from our house is this huge coyote - in broad daylight! He (or she) was eyeballing my little flock of hens that were foraging around the yard. We lost our new kitten about a month ago, just a few days after we were letting her stay out all night long. It's not like there aren't a million little rodents to eat either. The cats have littered the yard with carcasses of field mice, voles, moles, and pocket gophers (and an occasional bird or two). I really don't want to kill the coyote, just scare it a bit so it will leave my hens and kitties alone. My peace has been disturbed!
